Check your institution’s publication requirements

A journal can be appropriate for one institution’s purpose and unsuitable for another. Start with the policy that applies to your qualification, appointment or assessment, including the version and effective date. General marketing claims do not resolve an institution-specific requirement.

Obtain the actual rule

Use the official institutional or regulatory document, not a forwarded list. Identify the applicable programme, cohort, appointment or assessment period. If transitional rules or amendments exist, ask the responsible office which version governs your case.

Translate the rule into checks

Record the required article type, author role, journal recognition, database coverage and publication milestone. Keep “submitted,” “accepted,” “published” and “indexed” distinct. Ask for clarification where a term is not defined.

Verify journal status for the relevant purpose

Check official database records and any separate recognition system required by the policy. For example, an HEC recognition question requires checking the relevant HEC information, not merely a Scopus logo. Medical and other professional requirements likewise need their own governing source.

Keep the evidence and recheck

Save policy links, journal identifiers, status dates and written clarification. Revisit the information before submission and near the assessment deadline. Neither a consultant nor a journal advertisement can guarantee how an institution will interpret its requirements.
