What affects the quote
Relevant factors include document length and condition, the depth of editing, tables and references, dataset complexity, analytical objectives and the requested deadline. Journal selection or submission preparation may also be included. New data or a new manuscript version can change the scope.
Ask for an itemized scope
Confirm which documents will be reviewed, whether changes will be tracked, which checks are included, how many revision rounds are covered and what qualifies as additional work. Keep the approved quote with the project record.
Separate editorial fees from journal charges
A service fee pays for the agreed support, not acceptance. A journal may have its own charges and policies. Any journal-related payment should be identified and verified separately; do not assume it is included in an editing quote.
Request a useful estimate
Send your specialty, project type, current stage and deadline. For editing, include an approximate word count and target instructions. For statistical analysis, describe the study objectives and dataset size without sending patient identifiers. For publication support, mention journal preferences and any required indexing.
Revision work and a change of scope
Before confirming a quote, record the number of included revision rounds, the time allowed for feedback and the files covered. Correcting an agreed edit and adding new material are different requests. New data, a substantial rewrite or a change of target journal may require a revised quotation. Any additional fee should be agreed before that work begins.
Compare what to include in your quote
These are scope choices to confirm, not fixed packages. Your written quotation identifies the agreed deliverables, fee, deadline and revision terms.
Language and manuscript editing
- Deliverables to agree
- An agreed author-written draft reviewed for language, structure and consistency; confirm tracked changes, a clean copy and author queries in the quote.
- Outside the standard scope
- New research, replacement of missing scientific content, new analysis and journal fees.
- Revision terms to confirm
- Specify the number of rounds, response period and whether a substantially rewritten draft needs a new quote.
Complete thesis editing and formatting
- Deliverables to agree
- The complete author-written thesis or selected chapters, with the agreed language, reference, table and institutional formatting work; specify the document version and word count.
- Outside the standard scope
- Conducting the study, supplying original scholarship, supervisor approval or institutional fees.
- Revision terms to confirm
- Define how supervisor comments are handled and whether new chapters or a new template are additional work.
Journal and reference formatting
- Deliverables to agree
- Formatting against one agreed journal’s instructions, with the reference and submission-file checks listed in the scope.
- Outside the standard scope
- Full-text literature review, new references, translation or a second journal’s format unless agreed.
- Revision terms to confirm
- Specify correction rounds and whether changing the target journal requires a revised scope.
Statistical analysis and review
- Deliverables to agree
- Analysis of an agreed dataset, results tables and explanatory notes, or a review of existing methods and outputs. List the analytical objectives, files and reporting support covered.
- Outside the standard scope
- Additional datasets, new objectives, sample-size design or software-specific files and scripts unless included in the written scope.
- Revision terms to confirm
- Agree how many query-resolution rounds are included; new data, additional analyses or further reviewer requests can change the scope.
Journal publication support
- Deliverables to agree
- An agreed journal shortlist and the article preparation, formatting, cover letter or submission assistance listed in your plan. Authors approve the journal and final files.
- Outside the standard scope
- Journal charges unless explicitly included, and any guarantee of acceptance, indexing or a publication date.
- Revision terms to confirm
- Specify support after a journal decision and whether additional analysis, reviewer responses or a change of journal need a new quote.
Questions about pricing and scope
- Why is there no single fixed price?
- Manuscripts require different levels of work. The quotation should match the actual task instead of hiding exclusions behind a headline price.
- Does paying for support guarantee acceptance?
- No. Your payment covers agreed services, not a journal's independent decision.
- Are journal APCs included in the editorial fee?
- Do not assume they are. Ask for editorial service fees, journal charges, applicable taxes and third-party costs to be itemized separately. Confirm the journal’s own payment instructions and any waiver directly with the journal.
