Position the proposal
Explain the central argument, readership, competing or complementary books and the reason a book-length treatment is needed. An outline should show how the chapters build on each other. The publisher’s proposal template determines what commercial and author information is required.
Create a consistent chapter plan
Agree chapter purposes, key concepts, approximate lengths and transitions. In an edited volume, align terminology, citation style and repeated background while preserving individual authors’ contributions. Keep an editorial query record for issues requiring the volume editor’s decision.
Review references and permissions
Track quotations, images, tables and previously published passages that may require permission. Citation alone may not resolve every reuse requirement. Check the publishing agreement and current permissions guidance with the rights holder or publisher.
Prepare the manuscript package
Define which chapters, introductory matter, captions, bibliography and supporting files are included. Index preparation, specialist typesetting or permissions clearance must be specifically agreed. Acceptance and publication scheduling remain with the publisher.
Scope, files and delivery
Start with a short project brief. We assess the work, discuss the expertise required and confirm the deliverables, fee, schedule and included revisions in writing. Share the current version and the instructions that govern it. Additional data, a new target journal or a substantially changed brief may require a revised scope. You review the proposed changes and retain responsibility for the research.
