Practical resources for researchers

Plan a scoping review or living review

Review labels describe methodological choices and ongoing commitments. Decide what the project is meant to answer before choosing a label. MedScholars can discuss the planning, documentation and editorial support needed for the review type you and your supervisor have selected.

Use a scoping review for a clearly defined mapping purpose

Explain which concepts, evidence types or research contexts the review will map. Define inclusion criteria and information sources before screening. Do not promise an answer about effectiveness when the design is intended to describe the extent and characteristics of available research.

Design a charting form around the question

Pilot the fields on a small set of eligible sources. Record the definitions, reviewer roles and how uncertain classifications are resolved. A useful evidence table supports the review objectives instead of collecting every detail found in every paper.

Treat a living review as a maintained research process

Before starting, agree who monitors new evidence, how frequently searches run, what triggers an update and who approves revised findings. Budget for repeated screening and analysis. Keep a version history showing what changed, when it changed and why.

Use the reporting extension that fits the work

PRISMA-ScR provides reporting guidance for scoping reviews. PRISMA-LSR adds reporting items for living systematic reviews to PRISMA 2020. Read the relevant checklist alongside your methodological plan and record where each applicable item is addressed.

Agree a realistic handover

A support brief should include the protocol, search record, screening status, extraction or charting form, intended outputs and update responsibilities. For an existing review, identify the last search date and unresolved methodological decisions. A one-time editorial delivery should not be described as an indefinitely maintained review.
